Gods, Followings, & Powers

There are seven gods who make up the fabric of this world.

When an exceptionally disruptive event that generates a large amount of uncontrolled discord at once occurs, the gods may shed pieces of their 'flesh' in the midst of their overindulgence. This 'godflesh' appears in a different form depending on the god, and can be absorbed by pawns or demigods. This is the substance which allows pawns to become demigods, and demigods to acquire more power.

At the basement level of the tower are entrances to temples to each god. These temples are locked to all non-followers. At each entrance, characters will find tools, or "keys," with which to perform the initiation ritual for that god. Pawns who have performed a god's initiation ritual and become their follower may come and go from that god's temple as they please.

The gods will bestow blessings on their followers, either in exchange for a sacrifice or as a reward for their continued devotion (that is to say, bonus AC). More on sacrifices here. When receiving a blessing, followers may choose either a material reward or one of the powers listed below.

Characters can find all of this information about each god's nature, domain, and preferred discord, descriptions of the initiation rituals demanded of and the powers granted to their followers, as well as illustrations of the forms of their flesh manifest in texts founds in the library.

Sanguin
🜁Air. Cruelty. An unfettered, unshared revelry.
There is laughter on the wind, a song in your blood.

Flesh form: Concentrates in the air; the air thickens, blood condenses and drips from above.

Initiation ritual: Draw blood with a needle.
Ritual key: An antique needle.

Preferred discord: Cause, exacerbate, and revel in the suffering of others. Examples include:

laughing at others' pain

twisting a knife in a wound

most things here will also overlap with other gods' domains it's just a matter of being a sadist about it

Powers:
🜁 calcination:

Reopen an old wound, even if it has completely healed. User must know of the wound and consciously target it to reopen it.

🜁 dissolution:

Teleportation. Can be used on self, others, or objects. However, the destination will always be very very high up, or on the ceiling if indoors. The target of the teleportation will be magically protected from serious injury or damage, but hitting the ground will still hurt.

🜁 separation:

The user may force a target to admit to considering something precious. Anything the user knows the target holds precious (even if they found out about it through some other means) may be made into a ward against them. Approaching the object will cause that person pain and anguish that increases the closer they get. The precious object can be anything (favorite knife, a person, a building). Effect dispels when the user is no longer near the object.

🜁 conjunction:

Give someone a new joy for something they would normally be against for an IC day. You can give them a joy for stabbing, and they'll spend the day wanting to stab, and any time they do stab, they'll get an emotional rush as a reward from it. After the day is up, the rush will go away, and their general opinions on stabbing will revert to what they were previously. Can also be used on yourself.

🜁 fermentation:

Grant someone the ability to fully heal a wound only if they inflict a similar wound on someone else.

🜁 distillation:

Flight. Flying. Levitating. Yeah

🜁 coagulation:

Only available after attaining all other Sanguin powers. Become a demigod.

Flegmat
🜄Water. Violation. Gentle, sensitive, the persistent erosion of any formation.
It must be taken in. It seeps in.

Flesh form: Concentrates in a person; a, unknown liquid, blue, thick, and tasteless, overflows from a person's nose, throat, or eyes.

Initiation ritual: Collect a bit of hair, skin, or nail.
Ritual key: A vial pendant.

Preferred discord: Violate trust and boundaries. Examples include:

stalking

breaking an agreement

spilling someone else's secrets

that "I'm not touching you" shit

Powers:
🜄 calcination:

Instill a new physical need of your choice in another person. They will suffer symptoms such as an ache or foul mood when they go without or with too little of this new need for too long, and their health will deteriorate if they don't see to it at least once every few IC days (think along the lines of malnutrition or lack of sleep). The need can be anything as long as it's plausibly attainable (so no inflicting a need for unicorns when there's no unicorns around). The user cannot inflict multiple needs on the same person.

🜄 dissolution:

Target someone with a mental or physical condition that can be gradually increased (an affliction such as exhaustion, inability to focus, limbs feeling heavy, paranoia, OR a boon such as increased focus, good mood, better eyesight, etc). The effect will start mild; with every piece of information you speak aloud about the target (details about their personal life, upbringing, the kinds of food they like or dislike, their full name, etc), the effect will intensify. The effect can be dispelled by the user at will at any time; otherwise it will automatically wear off when the user and target are no longer within earshot of one another.

🜄 separation:

Disregard physical boundaries; make solid objects as permeable as liquid. Walk through walls, make another fall through the floor, etc. There must be air on the other side.

🜄 conjunction:

Use liquid as a scrying mirror to see what a person of your choice is doing at that moment. Any kind and any amount of liquid can be used, though the display will only be as large as the surface. Comes with audio.

🜄 fermentation:

Injured or lost body parts can be healed by replacing them with something functionally or thematically similar that does not belong to the person being healed. If someone got stabbed in the heart, you can replace it with their roommate's hammer (beats, like a heart) or your beloved locket with a picture of your wife (full of love, like a heart) or with someone else's heart. It will function perfectly well even though it will still be a hammer or a locket. The user may use this on themself.

🜄 distillation:

When someone comes into contact with your bodily fluids, you can read all their thoughts and feelings. Effect lasts for a couple hours. If the user does not already naturally have bodily fluids, they become able to generate fluids in some manner.

🜄 coagulation:

Only available after attaining all other Flegmat powers. Become a demigod.

Coleric
🜂Fire. Destruction. What once was becomes a blackened shell.
There is an end to all things.

Flesh form: Concentrates in anything flammable; the object burns, reduced to charcoal and ash, still tinged ember-orange at the edges even when it cools.

Initiation ritual: Burn someone with a match.
Ritual key: A match.

Preferred discord: Destroy things. Break things. Things includes people. Examples include:

breaking bones

breaking someone's favorite train set

arson

Powers:
🜂 calcination:

Start a fire, burn an object. The fire will burn as hot as is necessary for the target to alight. Cannot be used directly on a living being, but you could light up someone's clothes. Must be touching the object to start, but then the user will probably want to get some distance fast since they are not protected from being burned.

🜂 dissolution:

Amplify the force of an action. Could be used on a punch to break through a wall, a shout to make it much louder, a jump to propel yourself up high, etc.

🜂 separation:

Break or burn something in effigy to destroy an ability for one IC day. Can be a power, a skill, the ability to speak, the ability to move their left thumb, the ability to use doors, whatever. The effigy must have some connection to the target (something that belongs to them, or a table they sit at often, or a little doll made in their image, or a part of their body). The effigy does not need to be completely destroyed, even a crack is fine. Only one ability can be removed from a person at a time.

🜂 conjunction:

Fire can temper, much as it can destroy. The user may temper any item. Flip a coin OOC. Heads: it becomes a better version of its former self. Tails: it is rendered nothing but ash.

🜂 fermentation:

The user may burn themself to death and revive again, fully whole and uninjured. Removes mental/status effects as well if applicable. It does hurt.

🜂 distillation:

The user's palm lights up like a brand; burning this brand into someone's flesh will erase a memory. The burn does hurt when applied. Can be permanent or temporary; duration is up to the will of the user. The mark will remain for as long as the memory is gone. The user may use this on themself.

🜂 coagulation:

Only available after attaining all other Coleric powers. Become a demigod.

Melanc
🜃Earth. Exploitation. The steady practicality of a tool beneath a capable hand.
The field yields its rewards to toil.

Flesh form: Concentrates in a plant, or a wooden structure, or just the ground; an unfamiliar fruit grows, easily plucked, thin-skinned enough to bite through.

Initiation ritual: Bury something.
Ritual key: An ornate spade.

Preferred discord: Coerce others to act in your interests, and against their own. Examples include:

blackmail

manipulation

abuse of power

Powers:
🜃 calcination:

If someone agrees to something you ask of them, even without knowing the full extent (for example, "Could I ask you a favor?" "Sure"), you can compel their complete compliance for that task.

🜃 dissolution:

Sink something into the earth. Seeds or small objects can be buried; people or monsters can be sunk down to their knees. They'll have to dig themselves out or get creative to find another way to free themselves.

🜃 separation:

Generate a seed. When the seed touches another person's body, it will plant itself and take over that body part. The user can control the target's body part for one action, after which the seed will wither and fall away.

🜃 conjunction:

Give someone a mark of power, a tattoo like a flower bud of some kind applied by touch. This will give them a boost to accomplish something; increased physical strength to move a fallen tree, increased stamina and no longer needing rest for a project that might take days, increased magic to do a bigger spell than they could normally manage. If they succeed, the bud will bloom, and the target must give the user something that the user asks. Anything the user asks for can be given by magic if it couldn't be handed over normally (such as their voice, their name, etc) (of course they could just ask for easy physical repayments like food or clothes too). If the target fails to accomplish their goal even with the mark of power, or if they succeed but refuse to 'pay,' the flower mark will wither and the target will suffer (a physical ailment such as hanahaki, internal bleeding, achy joints, branches growing out painfully from under their nails, etc).

🜃 fermentation:

Grow plants. Even where there were no plants before. A bulb can be grown from a rock and sprout into a daffodil or an onion. A splint can be grown onto a broken arm from the flesh of the arm.

🜃 distillation:

Binding IOUs. Should all involved parties give their signature, any written terms and conditions for a loan will be magically enforced. The terms can be written in any medium, but if the text is damaged or destroyed in any way, the effect will be lost.

🜃 coagulation:

Only available after attaining all other Melanc powers. Become a demigod.

Anima
🜍Sulfur. Injury. Volatile, unsound genesis; the spark at the start of a chain reaction.
There is a beginning to all things.

Flesh form: Concentrates in something made of stone; fissures split open, revealing veins of sulfur soft enough to crumble beneath your nails.

Initiation ritual: Pour a dilute acid on something, or someone.
Ritual key: A container of dilute acid.

Preferred discord: Cause physical or emotional harm. Examples include:

making someone talk about the recent death of a loved one

leaving legos on the floor where someone ends up stepping on them

stabbing someone

Powers:
🜍 calcination:

Pull a weapon from someone's chest that represents their soul. The weapon can only be wielded by the user who pulled it out, and cannot be used to hurt the person whose soul it embodies. The user cannot pull their own soul out of their own chest, only other people's.

🜍 dissolution:

The user may project their consciousness out of their body to possess and animate an inanimate object. Possess a locked door to make it unlock itself. Become a stuffed animal for spying purposes or an angry sword for stabbing ones. Or just use this to put your soul somewhere else for a while to get away from your own body's back pain.

🜍 separation:

Pose a question to at least two people. No one but the user may leave the area until all who heard it have answered the question fully and truthfully of their own volition.

🜍 conjunction:

Transmute one substance into another; iron into gold, steel into rubber. Can only be used on inanimate objects. Solids must be transmuted into solids, liquids into liquids, gases into gases; can only be used on gases if a specific container of gas can be isolated and singled out (for example the air inside a balloon). The temperature, size, and general shape of the object are not changed.

🜍 fermentation:

Change the nature of an injury or ailment. Turn a broken leg into a burn on the face. Turn the burn on the face into a stab wound through the palm. Turn the flu into a bruise or a bruise into a persistent cough or blindness into diarrhea. The target cannot be made healthy and uninjured, but the user can keep moving the affliction around to make different parts of their body healthy and usable as needed, or make it an issue that will have a faster and easier recovery. Can be used to render lethal injuries no longer life threatening. The user may use this on themself or others.

🜍 distillation:

Energy boost. Can be used on someone tired to give them a second wind, or on someone asleep to wake them, or on someone dead to restart their heart and bring them back to life.

🜍 coagulation:

Only available after attaining all other Anima powers. Become a demigod.

Spiritus
☿Mercury. Deception. Fact poisoned with fiction: to think is to know.
An embellished memory glistens all the brighter in the mind.

Flesh form: Concentrates in something made of metal; mercury gathers on its surface like dew, gathers, and slips off in silvery tracks.

Initiation ritual: Write a lurid tale somewhere it can be seen and read.
Ritual key: A metal pen.

Preferred discord: Deceive people. Examples include:

lying

gaslighting

impersonation

Powers:
☿ calcination:

Hold an item in both hands for ten seconds to coat it with a contact poison. The poison cannot be lethal or completely incapacitating (no full-body paralysis, for example) but can otherwise be customized by the user to cause any effects they choose (delirium, loss of a sense, the poisoned individual can only speak in Pig Latin, the word THIEF appears written across their forehead, etc). The symptoms can be made to last for an IC day at most. The object retains its contact poison permanently unless removed by the user. The user is immune to the poison.

☿ dissolution:

Temporarily entrap someone in an illusory scene of the user's invention. This will have no physical effect on the target, but the experience will feel real to them. Only the target will see the illusion. Lasts for a few minutes at most, though the scene can be made to feel much longer to the target.

☿ separation:

Create a splinter self. The original body of the user is aware of both selves and knows everything the splinter body knows, but the splinter is unaware of the original and does not know they are a splinter. The splinter can be made to look like anything or anyone, and made to believe that they are anything or anyone. Only one splinter can be maintained at a time. Splinters can have differing physical abilities than the original body, but have no supernatural powers.

☿ conjunction:

Alter the nature of an object by changing its 'past'; tell someone that the sword they're using is many centuries old and has started to rust, and the sword will bear rust. Tell someone how the sandwich they're eating was spiked with arsenic by their jilted lover (they do not need to have a jilted lover), and they will have ingested arsenic. Must be an explanation of how the object's nature came to be, not just a declaration of what it is. Only works if someone hears/reads the claim.

☿ fermentation:

Rewrite someone's memories of an event that injured them. Their body reflects what their mind believes; they will be uninjured until they are given knowledge of the real event that took place, at which point they will remember the real event in full again, and their injuries will return. Their injuries will have recovered as much as they would have in that span of time. The user may use this on themself or others.

☿ distillation:

Illusory shapeshifting. The user may make themselves look (and sound, and smell) however they want. They can impersonate a different person, or make it look like they're suffering a terrible injury, or make themself look like a little bird, or blend into the wall behind them like an octopus. The user's body itself does not change; if someone punches the wall, and that's where the user's actual head is in reality, then they get punched in the face.

☿ coagulation:

Only available after attaining all other Spiritus powers. Become a demigod.

Corpus
🜔Salt. Contempt. The acrid and the unmovable.
The grit in your teeth yields to nothing.

Flesh form: Concentrates in a person; their sweat clusters and hardens somewhere on the body, encasing it in pink-stained crystal formations.

Initiation ritual: Put salt somewhere it ought not be.
Ritual key: A container of salt.

Preferred discord: Spite and demean others' wants, requests, and values. Examples include:

demand avoidance

desecrating something precious to someone else

Powers:
🜔 calcination:

The user may cause physical damage by speaking insults or criticisms. The user determines what kind of injury it inflicts; the degree is proportional to the severity and efficacy of the barb. If used against a person, the target may lessen the amount of damage they incur with a retort or counter-insult, again proportional to the efficacy of their retort. Can also be used against creatures and objects.

🜔 dissolution:

The more injured the user is, the stronger their capabilities become. Physical strength and speed, canon powers, other Corpus powers, heightened senses, even intellectual capabilities like puzzle-solving. Punch them and they get better at doing math. That's how bad they hate you.

🜔 separation:

The user summons salt in their palm and sprinkles it in a line to draw a ward. The user determines who or what is able or unable to cross the line. The ward also block powers from crossing (for example, a follower of Flegmat would not be able to see inside the ward with their scrying ability).

🜔 conjunction:

The user has the ability to cook and prepare anything and produce something safely edible that tastes however they want. They may also choose instead to cook something and produce something poisonous or explosive that tastes however they want.

🜔 fermentation:

The user may grow extra body parts wherever they want. The user may use this on themself or others. Put an extra eye on your back so you can see behind you. Store an extra heart around your pelvis in case the first one gets stabbed. Grow fingers out of the roof of someone's mouth so they shut the fuck up. The user must be touching the other person to use it on someone other than themself.

🜔 distillation:

The user may reject a logical conclusion to their current state and continue beyond it. The user may reject death when they've been struck by a lethal blow or five or had their head crushed entirely. Reject falling asleep when they haven't slept in seventeen days. Reject falling unconscious when they've breathed in chloroform. Reject their leg giving out from under them when it's broken. They will still limp, hurt, struggle, lose focus, lose lucidity, but they come to a stop only when they choose; their stop will not come for them.
